POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Clerk 4 to join our Major Crimes Division, within the Investigative Services Bureau. The person selected for this position will work with various units within the Major Crimes Division and will report to the Staff Sergeant. The position will require the performance of complex clerical tasks requiring a high level of responsibility and operational support functions. The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate independent judgement and initiative.
Schedule / Hours of Work
The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, based on a 35-hour work week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interprets and communicates departmental regulations to the public to address complex issues.
- Reviews and validates the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of a wide array of records, statements, and office documents within departmental regulations.
- Creates new forms, procedures, and instructions, subject to a review by a supervisor.
- Compiles documents by collecting and reviewing a range of data and complex statistical reports.
- Conducts junior level accounting statistical analysis.
- Composes various technical letters, and operational documents.
- Assists other staff in their duties, including operational support.
- May be assigned to different divisions or sections within the department.
- Take minutes for meetings and/or critical incidents.
- May be required to supervise other clerical staff in a variety of functions.
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to exercise good judgement in the performance of duties.
- Proficiency in project planning, organization, supervision, and procedure development.
- Ability to supervise and train staff.
- In-depth understanding of business communication, office protocols, procedures, and equipment usage.
- Proficiency in preparing and maintaining complex records, correspondence, and reports.
- Ability to create and organize statistical reports, tables, as well as drafting letters and memos.
- Demonstrates strong public relations and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work with relevant work related software and applications.
- Knowledge of Surrey Police Service (SPS) policies, procedures and standards.
- Working knowledge of the department’s operation, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Familiarity with office management principles and practices.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the relevant level of security clearance throughout employment with SPS.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of several business courses at a post-secondary level.
- Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible and diversified clerical experience including some supervisory experience.
- A minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- This position requires both SPS Security Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status. All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

- The salary range is $31.97/hour - $34.75/hour (pay grade 15) based on 2024 rates.
