On November 29, 2024, SPS became the police of jurisdiction, and assumed responsibility and command for policing and law enforcement in Surrey. POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time Community Programs Coordinator to join our Community Policing South Division, within the Community Policing Bureau. Reporting to the Crime Prevention and Volunteer Manager and under general direction, the incumbent leads, directs, develops, promotes, coordinates crime prevention programs and services related to community safety. Employees in this professional role provide support in developing goals and strategies, in alignment with Surrey Police Service (SPS) strategic priorities.
Schedule / Hours of Work
The anticipated schedule for this position is 35 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Researches, designs, develops, coordinates, and promotes community safety programs, for crime prevention, special events and awareness campaigns.
- Evaluates effectiveness of current programs and harmonizes SPS crime prevention efforts with other community services.
- Organizes, schedules, and presents training and information sessions related to crime prevention and crime free multi housing.
- Interfaces with the media regarding the programs.
- Prepares correspondence, reports and information summaries and carries out other administrative duties related to the work.
- Writes program policies and training workbooks.
- Coordinates and facilitates meetings, workshops, and outreach/engagement activities related to crime prevention issues.
- Compiles, composes, prepares, designs, and edits a variety of newsletter articles and other related material.
- Prepares and edits a variety of educational materials related to crime free multi housing and crime prevention programs and initiatives.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises the work of volunteers/students involved in crime prevention work.
- Represents SPS on various boards, task forces and committees.
- Provides instruction and training to law enforcement agencies, owners, landlords, and other organizations.
- Identifies and assists in addressing community crime problems by working with SPS police officers, and the community.
- Liaises with community representatives and participants of crime prevention programs and initiatives to exchange
- information, offer support and direction, and provide current materials and supplies.
- Liaises with and plays an active role in applicable societies, executives, and other crime prevention committees.
- Attends internal and external meetings related to crime prevention issues.
- Ensures management is apprised of any developments within programs and initiatives, as well as significant incidents/issues.
- Researches and evaluates reports and crime statistics to enhance community safety programs.
- Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the budget.
- Maintains inventory and supply of required materials.
- Acts as a resource person for police officers and the public regarding an array of safety and crime issues.
- Conducts police records checks on prospective program participants and escalates to management as required.
- Organizes and coordinates special activities as required.
- Upon request from management, conducts specific fund raising for crime prevention initiatives.
- Prepares, operates, and conducts automated computerized fan out messages.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
- Supplemented by a minimum of two years of related work experience.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS.

- This is a unionized position, represented by CUPE 402.
- The salary range is $38.98 to $43.77 per hour (pay grade 22) based on 2024 rates.
