Surrey Police Service (SPS) is Surrey’s new municipal police agency. The transition from the RCMP to SPS is well underway and SPS has spent the past three years building a local, modern, accountable police service for Surrey residents. On November 29, 2024, SPS will become the police of jurisdiction, assuming responsibility for policing and law enforcement in Surrey.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Constables fill a critical front-line role, enabling public safety at the community level. They work in daily partnership with local communities, stakeholders, SPS team members, and other policing agencies (including Integrated Teams) to promote public safety, community engagement, and community well being to support the quality of life for citizens.
This role carries legal powers to enable the maintenance of law and order and carries responsibility for making decisions in accordance with the BC Police Act, exercising professional discretion, as appropriate to the role, in line with legal frameworks, and SPS policing guidelines.
Constables are required to meet and maintain the highest professional standards required of their role, by conducting all actions in a legal, ethical, and justifiable manner to uphold the law and achieve the best outcomes in a wide range of situations/incidents.
SPS’s Constables model the mission, vision, and values of SPS through unquestioned integrity and sustaining a visible, credible, inclusive, and respected profile. They have a strong work ethic and are committed to a community-based policing model that looks beyond immediate issues and searches for realistic longer-term answers to complex community and social issues and emerging risks and trends.
Illustrative work examples where these skills are utilized include but are not limited to the following:
Provide initial and ongoing frontline response to a wide range of calls for service and incidents that may include complex and confrontational situations, assessing immediate risk, threat, and harm to determine a proportionate response in line with the law, policy, and guidance.
Take a lead role in establishing effective localized partnerships to problem solve, engage with, reassure, and support organizations, groups, and individuals in line with the SPS’s values, mission, and vision.
Effectively engage with victims, witnesses, suspects, and the vulnerable to provide initial support, direction towards relevant services, establish relationships, and gather information that supports greater public safety in accordance with equality, diversity, and human rights considerations,
Maintain awareness of potential and actual risks to individuals, taking appropriate action to protect and support those in need of public protection.
Conduct effective and efficient priority and high-volume investigations as requested in line with standards of investigation to inform the development of case files and initiation of criminal justice proceedings.
Gather and handle information, intelligence, and evidence, from a variety of sources, in line with legislation, policies and guidance, taking the appropriate action to support investigations, law enforcement, and criminal justice proceedings.
Conduct first line analysis of information, intelligence, and evidence to determine significance, generate lines of enquiry, inform decision making and support evidence-based policing.
Identify opportunities for and support the exploration of new ways of operating and applying critical thinking and problem-solving methodologies to identify solutions to problems in line with evidence-based practices within area of work.

- Minimum 19 years of age.
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Physically fit and in excellent health.
- No criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted and no adult criminal charges pending (pardon must be included in the application).
- No history of improper conduct or poor employment, a negative military, educational, credit or driving record that would affect their suitability for policing duties.
- A valid and substantive class 5 drivers licence with no restrictions and a good driving history with a minimum three years of driving experience.
- A visual requirement of Uncorrected vision 20/40 with both eyes open, with one eye no worse than 20/100. Corrected vision no worse than 20/40. Colour vision must be normal. Peripheral vision- 150 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian binocularity and 30 degrees above and below fixation point. Binocular vision- acuity of 100 seconds of arc or better (pass the TITMUS or RANDOT – circles test).
- The hearing standard mandates a loss no greater than 30dB in both ears in the 500-3000 Hz range.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to set out information clearly, meeting the needs of different audiences.
- Good teamwork skills demonstrating awareness of individual differences.
- Strong ethics and a demonstrated history of professionalism.
- Able to proactively develop effective working relationships with the community, colleagues, and other stakeholders while understanding their needs and concerns.
- Able to manage conflict and defuse difficult situations.
- Able to review and reflect on own performance objectively and to take steps to maintain and enhance competence and professional standards appropriate to the role.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
Educational Standards
- All applicants must have a grade 12 education or equivalent (GED).
- A minimum of 30 post-secondary credits or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Education obtained from an institution outside Canada must be evaluated. International Credential Evaluation (ICES) can evaluate your education and compare it to Canadian standards.
- It is an asset for an applicant to speak a second language.
This is an operational role so the successful candidates must:
Able to work all shifts (including extended work days and nights (12 hours) and rotating schedules) fully operational and fit for duty. This includes the following abilities and requirements:
- Licensed and able to operate a Police vehicle and attend calls for service.
- Qualified and able to use issued force options as and when required (i.e. baton, OC, firearm, Use of force, de-escalation training).
- Trained and able to engage the public in a variety of circumstances, including physical contact if required.
- Able to wear protective equipment, including body armour.
Conditions of Employment
- Successful applicants must complete the entire JIBC Recruit Basic Police Officer Training Program and obtain Qualified Municipal Constable status
- Successful applicants must obtain and maintain the required level of Security Clearance
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications
