Surrey Police Service (SPS) is Surrey’s new municipal police agency. On November 29, 2024, SPS became the police of jurisdiction, and assumed responsibility and command for policing and law enforcement in Surrey. SPS is working to redefine policing with innovative new approaches and community-based solutions. POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for an Inclusion and Awareness Coordinator to join our Community Policing South Division, within the Community Policing Bureau. Reporting to Manager, Community Partnerships, the incumbent provides planning, research, and recommendations on the management of diversity issues in relation to the operations of Surrey Police Service (SPS) and implements related programs. Identifies problem areas, develops learning tools and coordinates and/or conducts workshops for internal personnel and diverse communities. Seeks partnership opportunities and makes recommendations on internal changes based on best practices. Currently, the position is scheduled run for up to 18 months (approximately). The duration of the term may be shortened or extended based on operational needs
Schedule / Hours of Work
The anticipated schedule for this position is 35 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans, researches, develops, implements, administers, and evaluates diversity programs and makes recommendations on the management of diversity related issues.
- Develops learning tools and/or educational workshops to assist staff, and the public in dealing with diversity issues.
- Coordinates and/or conducts community workshops to assist diverse communities to better understand policing services in Surrey and promotes awareness of diversity issues and programs through presentations, internally (SPS) and externally (community).
- Participates in relevant committees for enhancing the objectives of diversity awareness and public safety.
- Attends and/or coordinates the attendance of police officers at community diversity events.
- Seeks out community partnership opportunities to enhance diversity in relation to public safety in the community and builds partnerships.
- Liaises with other sections to identify and action problem areas in relation to diversity issues.
- Researches external best practices, such as those implemented in other communities, and makes recommendations for changes.
- Develops a network of community contacts for the various diversity groups in Surrey and the larger community.
- Maintains a current list of media contacts and provides the media section with updates as requested.
- Acts as a primary resource person for staff and the public regarding diversity issues.
- Selects, trains, and directs volunteers involved in diversity programs and provides direction to junior staff as required.
- Prepares and maintains records, reports and statistics related to the work.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
- Minimum of two years related experience in the field of social services preferably working with diverse
- communities
- All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

- The salary range is $38.98/hour - $43.77/hour (pay grade 22) based on 2024 rates.
