2024, SPS became the police of jurisdiction, and assumed responsibility and
command for policing and law enforcement in Surrey. SPS is working to redefine

POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey
Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time Media
Relations Coordinator to join our Communications Section, within the Office of
the Chief Constable. Reporting to the Sergeant/Media Relations Officer, Media
Relations Unit, the incumbent identifies and distributes issues that may be
newsworthy, liaises with members of the media, public, internal sections, and
employees. Supports and assists the Media Relations Officers in the preparation
of news releases, media advisories, and public messaging. They also track and
distribute enquiries from internal and external sources for responses by SPS’s
Media Relations Officers or designates. The incumbent will exercise a
significant degree of judgement and initiative within established guidelines
under general direction.
Schedule / Hours of
Work
This is an on-site
position, and hybrid work is not currently supported. The anticipated schedule
for this position is 35 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject to
change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinates
media interviews, events, and press conferences.
Monitors
and reviews daily news media for relevant stories and catalogues and
distributes notable information.
Assists
the Media Relations Officers in monitoring, tracking, and responding to media
relations enquiries received by phone or email.
Responds
to enquiries from external government agencies, journalists, civilians, and other
police agencies.
Researches,
verifies, and summarizes file and related information to prepare news releases
and/or prepare spokespersons for media interviews.
Drafts
news releases, media advisories, and public messaging for approval by Media
Relations Officers or appropriate SPS employees.
Prepares
and produces media related materials.
Maintains
and updates databases of media files, media contact information, messaging,
background information, and other related data.
Tracks
and provides media-related statistics to relevant stakeholders.
Posts
news releases online through the appropriate communication channels.
Provides
guidance and training to staff in a workplace setting.
Performs
other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion
of Grade 12, supplemented by a degree or diploma in communications, journalism,
media, public relations, or a related field.
A
minimum of four years related experience
An
equivalent combination of training and experience.
Previous
police experience preferred
All
applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance
throughout their employment with SPS, which includes
a mandatory polygraph examination.

by CUPE 402.
The compensation range is $38.25/hour
- $41.75/hour (pay grade 19) based on 2026 rates.
