POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time OCC Trainer to join our Community Policing North Division, within the Community Policing Bureau. Reporting to the OCC Manager and their delegate, the incumbent is responsible for providing and implementing training to telecommunication operators which includes completing extensive call reviews and coaching and identifying training needs in the OCC. The incumbent will exercise independence of judgment and work under limited supervision.
Schedule / Hours of Work
The anticipated schedule for this position is a flexible 37.5-hour week (7.5 hours per day). Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans, designs, conducts, and supervises training for OCC and switchboard staff.
- Conducts post-examination interviews with course participants.
- Provides extensive and ongoing coaching and support to others and contributes to ongoing development of staff.
- Completes call reviews and maintains records including audio tapes for training purposes.
- Prepares, maintains, and updates lesson plans and course materials.
- Research, reviews, and adjusts course syllabus to meet SPS/division/OCC policy and training needs.
- Processes, monitors, and schedules applications for training.
- Coordinates the scheduling of qualification testing for all positions.
- Receives input on the performance of OCC operators to identify refresher training needs, readiness for further training, and promotions.
- Performs needs assessments and evaluations for all operators to determine training requirements.
- Identifies performance gaps and creates development plans.
- Identifies future training needs and provides recommendation on training programs as needed.
- Provides feedback to supervisors regarding training requirements and program availability.
- Provides materials and support to assist in the facilitation of training.
- Provides training in radio dispatch to OCC operators.
- Assists in the development of work methods, standards and procedures, and manuals.
- Liaises between OCC operators and management on operational problems and concerns.
- Acts as a resource person with regard to procedures and operations.
- Maintains a list of training issues and contacts (speakers) to assist in the delivery of relevant training.
- Prepares the training room for courses and provides opening remarks for course openings when required.
- Establishes and maintains all related records, files, and training materials.
- Responds to telephone inquiries in relation to a career in the OCC.
- Maintains and updates OCC audio tapes for training purposes.
- Maintains a liaison with all mentoring operators to determine training days.
- Maintains orientation package provided to hired SPS police officers and attends orientation for new recruits.
- Assists with the creation of a yearly course calendar for training within SPS.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in effective training and supervision.
- A combination of five years relevant experience or training as an Emergency Services Call Taker/Dispatcher which includes experience in the use and operation of police telecommunications dispatch and complaint taking equipment and information systems.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
- Accurate typing speed of 45 wpm
- This position requires both SPS Security Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status. All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

- The salary range is $40.53 to $47.68 (pay grade 24D) based on 2025 reclassification.
