POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Paralegal to join our Professional Standards Section, within the Corporate Services Bureau. This position is responsible for providing confidential legal administrative support to the Professional Standards Section regarding investigations related to public trust, internal discipline and policy matters. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of litigation processes and procedures, experience in preparing and organizing correspondence and a variety of legal document ensuring compliance with court and tribunal rules, and proven research and legal analysis skills.
Schedule / Hours of Work
This position works a standard 37.5 hours per week with anticipated days and hours to be Monday – Friday approx. 8am - 4pm. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducting and preparing legal research in relation to the Police Act as requested
- Researching and examining relevant case law precedents, comparable decisions, mediated hearings, Police Act changes and policy changes
- Assisting with the drafting of Discipline Authority Decisions
- Summarizing and distributing legal updates to the section
- Assisting with Prehearing Conferences and Disciplinary Proceeding preparations including witness notification and procedural guidance to Discipline Authority
- Managing and coordinating logistics related to Discipline Proceedings and Hearings (i.e. audio, recording, exhibits)
- Maintaining and updating an electronic legal library of decisions and legal opinions
- Tracking and managing specific substantiated file timelines set out in the Police Act
- Transcription of interviews and Discipline Proceedings
- Manages Service Records of Discipline and expungement dates
- Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

- Strong critical thinking skills with a high level of initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving.
- Detail oriented with an excellent ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize tasks within strict timelines.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently.
- High level of proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Powerpoint and various document management systems.
QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of a recognized Paralegal Diploma Program

A minimum of five years of related administrative experience and working experience specifically with the B.C. Police Act. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Membership in the British Columbia Paralegal Association is considered an asset.
All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

- The salary range is $78,716-$92,604 (pay grade A3) based on 2024 rates.
