POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for an auxiliary Switchboard Operator to join our Operational Communications Centre (OCC) Unit, within the Community Policing Bureau. Reporting the OCC Manager, the incumbent operates a switchboard and responds to a wide range of general inquiries including receiving and directing calls and message taking.
Schedule / Hours of Work
To be eligible for this auxiliary position, incumbents must have flexible availability and be able to commit to a minimum of two (2) shifts per month. Shifts may include weekdays, evenings, weekend and holidays. Assigned shifts may be prescheduled or by call-in. The anticipated work schedule for the base full-time position is 35 hours a week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides information in a prompt, accurate, and courteous manner while performing switchboard/receptionist duties.
- Receives and transcripts accurate information from the public and forwards them to the appropriate section.
- May receive emergency calls for assistance and transfers calls to appropriate area.
- Operates a fax machine, receiving and transmitting data.
- Maintains phone and address lists of section personnel.
- Takes messages and provides general information to the public.
- Maintains logs and records related to duties and performs other clerical duties.
- Performs some data entry.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by business courses and one year of switchboard experience.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Ability to type 45 wpm.
- This position requires both SPS Security Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status. All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS, which includes a mandatory polygraph examination.

- The salary range is $30.12/hour - $31.97/hour (pay grade 12) based on 2024 rates.
