POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for an auxiliary Victim Services Caseworker to join our Community Partnerships Support Section, within the Community Policing Bureau. Reporting to the Community Partners and Programs Manager, the incumbent, under the supervision of the manager, provides direct support services to crime and trauma victims and witnesses. Duties include providing emotional support, crisis intervention, and practical assistance to victims of crime and trauma. The position also assists with emergency responses, referrals, court support and case updates. Works with police, fire personnel, and community agencies to ensure victim safety and access to resources.
Schedule / Hours of Work
This is an on-site position and the anticipated schedule for this position is 40 hours per week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides ongoing emotional support, information, and practical assistance to victims of crime, trauma, and domestic disputes, as requested by clients.
- Provides direct emergency crisis support to victims and witnesses of crime and other trauma at scene, in office, or at another location as the situation demands.
- Provides referrals to community or government agencies. Arranges for transition house placement.
- Arranges for and/or provides emergency transportation to transition house, residence etc. Accompanies sexual assault victims to hospital for SANE exam.
- Assists Surrey Police Service (SPS) police officers with next-of-kin notifications, providing emotional and practical support including transporting family to hospital for identification.
- Assists City of Surrey Fire Department personnel with fire victims.
- In consultation with investigating officers and outside agencies, updates clients on the progress of cases through the criminal justice system, including police, court, and corrections systems.
- Provides clients with referrals and information about available community and government resources.
- Provides clients with information regarding home and personal safety, non-criminal protection orders, and replacement of stolen or lost documents.
- Assists clients with crime victim assistance applications.
- Assists clients with completing victim impact statements for court. Provides information regarding the Victims of Crime Act of British Columbia.
- Conducts court orientations, including courthouse tours, with victims and witnesses, as required. Facilitates court accompaniment for victims and witnesses, as required.
- Provides emergency court accompaniment and accompaniment to crown counsel meetings for victims and witnesses, when directed by the Manager Victim Services.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate client file field notes, computerized documentation, and maintaining diary dates.
- Prepares correspondence, reports, and information summaries related to the work, as required by the Manager Victim Services.
- Provides short-term emergency childcare. Coordinates the after-hours service.
- Presents information to the public staff and attends community meetings as requested by the Manager Victim Services. Attends community meetings, as requested by the Manager Victim Services.
- Assists other staff in performing their duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by a post-secondary diploma/degree in a related field
- A minimum of one-year related experience or, completion of several related post secondary courses plus three years directly related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
- All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police clearance throughout their employment with SPS. This role also requires RCMP Reliability Status (security clearance).

- The salary range is $39.21 per hour - $44.00/per hour (pay grade 26L) based on 2024 rates.
